Tricks To Keeping Your Fridge Clean

Tricks To Keeping Your Fridge Clean

What is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a successful food and beverage business? It's cleanliness. When the health department comes a-calling, if you don't present clean surfaces and equipment, you're going to be in for a world of hurt. Aside from that, clean and properly functioning equipment means less chance for lost revenue in the long run. With that in mind, we’re going to take a look at ways of keeping your fridge clean so as to avoid unnecessary maintenance and issues with the health department.

Follow these refrigerator refresher tips for a more presentable, healthier refrigeration environment.

Toothbrushes and Hard to Clean Places

It never fails. If something is going to spill, it’s going to spill in one of those hard-to-reach areas that sponges just can't touch. In place of bigger scrubbing tools, an old toothbrush can do the trick. You will, of course, want to keep this completely separate from any toothbrush you use for personal hygiene!

Make Sure You Have a Clean Bottom

This does, of course, apply to jars and other containers. What did you think we were referring to? Seriously, however, rings on shelves can be left by jam bottles, salad dressing bottles, and more. They pile up fast and can be practically impossible to get off after time. With a wet sponge or towel, quickly give containers a fast wipe before you store them back in the fridge. Protect the shelf further with a piece of paper on the bottom of chronically sticky jars as with syrup or honey.

Defrosting Foods

Don't defrost food on the shelf. It never fails that juices somehow leak out of the bag or wrap that you thought was sealed. Instead, throw the food in a bowl, which can then be tossed in the dishwasher after defrosting.

That Disgusting Door Seal

We say “disgusting” because people seem to forget about the door seal, and it can quickly become one of the most gruesome and unhealthy parts of your kitchen. You'll save money on your energy bill as well, by keeping a clean door seal the fridge will run well longer, because air leaks will be prevented around the seal if it's clean.

Stop Food Spoilage

In the business, some chefs jokingly refer to cleaning out walk-in leftovers as "Cream of Walk-In Soup". It's not too far from the truth and a good idea, in reality. Rather than allowing foods on the edge to dry up and dirty your fridge, or worse yet spoil, grab veggies and other leftovers and make one big "cleanout meal". It could be stir fry, a simple fajita, big pots of soup, etc.

Make a Monthly, Weekly, and Daily Cleaning Schedule

You'll worry less about the health department, enjoy better returns on your investments, and have more pride in your kitchen with a monthly, weekly, and daily cleaning/maintenance schedule for your fridge, freezer, etc.

Of course, having a schedule and actually sticking to it are two different things. Make sure you do both.
